Plumber: Big tips for small bathrooms
News from The San Luis Obispo Tribune:

Q: Dear Ed, can you please remind me of some of your big “Ed” tips to keep in mind when remodeling a smaller bathroom? Our bathroom will include a shower stall, so we want to take advantage of every inch.

- Frank, Rhode Island

A: Here’s my three favorite areas to address with smaller bathrooms. But, much of this information can apply to larger bathrooms as well.

1. Start with the basics. Storage and ventilation are key areas to address. Incorporate storage space with fixture space. Wall shelving above the toilet tank and vanity space under the sink can be two nice storage areas. Also, open air space can be tight in a small bathroom, so make sure you install a good exhaust fan.

2. Keep it light. White, off-white and almond can be nice color choices for small bathrooms. Light colors can help hide water splash marks and keep the room nice and bright.

3. Upgrade the fixtures. Plumbing fixtures with all the bells and whistles may offset the feeling of being in a smaller space. Installing a state-of-the-art showerhead with a built-in music speaker can make you feel like you’re living large in your newly remodeled bathroom.

The MUHC is plumbing the depths of the drainage problem at the superhospital site.

Since the hospitals opened at the Glen site — and even earlier, according to some sources — there have been many cases of black sewage water flowing out of drain pipes and on to the hospital’s floors.

In the third step to finding the root of the problem, cameras are being lowered into drain pipes to find the source of the water.

“Since we opened, there’s been an increase in the number of patient visitors and consequently the problem became more and more real,” said Normand Rinfret, the executive director of the MUHC.

Since the opening of the Glen site facilities, a high volume of ‘code flood’ calls have occurred, meaning black liquid is emerging from the drains and onto the floors.

The problem has been identified as occurring in specific areas, an internal memo explained.

“That’s why we’re taking action for these specific areas,” said Rinfret, adding that the visual inspections began earlier this week.

The first step in finding a solution was to analyze all the blueprints to ensure the building conformed to code, which it does.

The second was to analyze…………… continues on CTV News

Report says that 66% plumbers are unskilled. Can on-demand home services …
News from YourStory.com:

Pointing to a yawning gap between skills training and the final output in the plumbing industry, a report said that up to 66 per cent of plumbers are not fit enough to handle real world challenges. A total of 55-66 per cent are unable to handle real world plumbing situations where they need to observe, identify and solve a problem by application of plumbing knowledge combined with analytical reasoning, according to the Skills Plumbers 2015 report by assessment firm Aspiring Minds.

However, about 80 per cent of the candidates have knowledge of basic plumbing principles such as usage of tools and pipe fittings. The report was based on a comprehensive and standardised assessment of 3,000 plumbers across India who took plumbing training for 4-8 weeks in 2014. The report put the spotlight on the need for a more hands-on training curriculum, which will not only help vocational workers gain a better socio-economic status but help build a stronger nation that has well-planned cities, villages and houses.

“Skills will define opportunity in the 21st century, and there is a global trend to identify, train, assess and deploy skills to boost productivity and growth. With soaring…………… continues on YourStory.com

News from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

By Deborah M. Todd / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

For entry-level and mid-career job seekers, the search process can be a shot at a new beginning at its best and an exercise in frustration at its worst. But for individuals over 50, diving back into a market that favors grooming young professionals over matching lifetime earnings of industry veterans can be so daunting that many give up on their former careers entirely.

“When the recession hit in 2007 and 2008, companies really started trying to limit their costs and a lot of people in their 50s and 60s were laid off. And unless they have special skills that no one else in their industry has, it becomes more difficult to find another job,” said Blake Nations, Atlanta-based founder and CEO of Over50jobboard.com.

The 59-year-old former corporate recruiting specialist speaks from experience.

When Mr. Nations was laid off in January 2014, he hit so many walls during the job search he ended up taking a position at a grocery store on the weekends to make ends meet. While there, he ran into others his age who had been laid off from professional positions and had to take the first job that came along in order to pay the bills.

“When you look on the job boards, a lot of [companies] say they want someone with five to 15 years of experience. Basically they’re looking for folks that are 25 to 40 years o…………… continues on Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Plumbing problem…Advice please?

Hi all,

Could do with some pointers from someone with direct experience as I’ve never encountered this problem before.

We’re having a recurring issue in our villa with the water seals in the toilet bowls, which keep breaking and filling the place with sewer gas.

It’s been happening frequently in one of the WCs, but happened last night in another.

Plumbing problem blamed for sewage water at Montreal Children’s
News from CTV News:

A plumbing problem at the new Montreal Children’s Hospital has led to black sewer water backing up drains in patient bathrooms.

Contractor SNC-Lavalin is the building’s landlord and is in charge of maintaining the building. A spokesperson from the company said the issue was caused by a mechanical break in one of the urinals He also said that plumbers have had to unclog 50 toilets at the Children’s and says most of these cases are caused by a misuse of toilets, not a problem with the drainage system.

The Children’s Hospital opened at the end of May and each room has its own private bathroom. There is a little drain on the floor and staff members have started to notice those drains backing up with black sewer water. Patients and visitors have complained of the stench caused by these backups.

“Those glitches are being corrected as we speak but obviously there are a few problems to resolve. I’m confident everything will be resolved in the next year — the next months, actually,” said Health Minister Gaetan Barrette.

But since the hospital opened, the fix-it list has been getting longer. Officially there are 3,000 documented deficiencies at the hospital but some suggest that number is far higher.

News from Milford Daily News:

It is truly underestimated how much work it takes to be a homeowner.

Some homeowners are inclined to think that being a handy do-it-yourselfer can save a lot of money in the long run and, as such, will take on any home improvement task that comes their way. Sometimes, though, success comes down to the homeowner’s capabilities and realizing that these projects are more complicated than just doing It yourself. Some home issues need more attention and skill than any average homeowner could offer.

Although your wallet and ego might take a hit, there are occasions when it’s best to bite the bullet and call an expert. This is especially true for your home plumbing issues, and here’s why.

It can be harder than it looks

This is a phrase we’ve all heard before, but hope never applies to our situation. With plumbing situations, this is unfortunately the norm. Simple logic says that if there’s a leak in your piping, you should be able to tighten the loose part with a wrench, however it usually is not that simple. If it were truly this easy, we all could call ourselves plumbers. The 4- to 5-year apprenticeship that hopeful plumbers go through, followed by examinations to obtain a plumber’s license, wo…………… continues on Milford Daily News

UH-Manoa dorm residents start school year with no hot water
News from KHON2:

Some University of Hawaii-Manoa students are starting the new school year with no hot water in their dorms. So far, they’ve been told UH is working on the problem and to heat some water in a pot in the meantime.

Raquel Lasconia said the bathroom floor of her Hale Wainani apartment is constantly soaked.

And that’s not all. “But once you turn to hot side, it turns off,” she said.

With no hot water, it means cold showers every day.

“I’m pretty mad,” Lasconia said. “I didn’t know what to do actually. I’ve been asking other students if they’ve been experiencing the same problems.”

Dorm resident Kathleen Gragasin said her ceiling leaks. “It’s kind of gross, using the bathroom with water going down your back, especially if you know it’s coming from the toilet upstairs.”

On Tuesday, the campus’ student housing services sent out a mass email, acknowledging the various problems. It said the school was hiring a plumber to look at the issues. But it also said to those who didn’t have hot water “if you absolutely cannot have a cold shower or want to clean dishes and the like, you might want to get a big pot or bowl and heat up your water.”

“That’s what I did when I lived in the Philippines,” Gragasin said.

And the cost to live at Hale Wainani and share an apartment with three other students? — about $ 6,500 a year.

That’s more than all your other appliances combined.[1] As we focus on the environment for Earth Day, plumbers with Benjamin Franklin Plumbing® offer these suggestions for quick and easy things you can do at home to help conserve water and energy with your plumbing.

Tip #1: Adjust the temperature on your hot water heater .

This is quick and easy to do. According to the Department of Energy setting your hot water heater at 120º or lower can help you save more than $ 60 a year on your utility bill.[2] You can also turn off your water heater if you are away on vacation to conserve energy.

Tip #2: Add an insulation blanket

Weird plumbing problem forces some Walmart stores to close
News from KSN-TV:

TAMPA, Florida (WFLA) – Walmart customers can’t understand what’s plaguing the “plumbing problems” of Walmart stores from Florida to California.

“Must be a major plumbing problem is all I can say,” would-be customer Dale White said as security guards turned him away from the Supercenter in Florida.

The retail chain announced Monday that five stores are shutting down, one in Florida, two in Texas, one in Oklahoma and one in California due to clogging and drainage problems.

“Deciding to close a store is not a decision we make lightly,” Walmart Spokesperson Amanda Henneberg said in a statement.

Henneberg attributed the 13-year-old Brandon store’s shutdown to chronic troubles during the past two years. She insisted repairs will start immediately.

The shutdown blindsided about 400 Walmart workers in Floriday who must now find another store to transfer to or receive 60-days pay for the loss of their jobs.

According to Hillsborough County, Florida, Walmart didn’t notify the county’s permit department either. No one there has heard a peep from Walmart about any major repairs.

If you scan tech news headlines you’ll notice a certain predilection for the shiny and new, a tendency to cover pre-IPO, still-nascent social platforms that have the potential to capture market share from current stalwarts. We’re constantly treated to ballooning valuations and think pieces about how Company X is attracting a lucrative demographic (usually millennials).

But one of the most well-positioned social media companies with vast potential for growth isn’t shiny or new. In fact, it held its initial public offering in 2011 and launched more than a decade ago. Yes, we’re talking about LinkedIn, the website that, up until recently, you only visited when you were looking for a job. With its $ 2 billion in annual revenue, it would be easy to dismiss LinkedIn as a tiny gnat buzzing around Facebook, which brought in $ 12 billion in 2014 revenue and currently boasts 1.3 billion active users.
